Confidentiality Workshop within the Water Efficient Maize for Africa (“WEMA”)

6th & 7th August 2009, CIMMYT, Nairobi, Kenya
D.ssa Francesca Re Manning led a workshop on the meaning and importance of confidentiality and confidential obligations. The two days’ workshop were part of a week training for the Finance, Communication and Human Resources Units within the WEMA project, including CIMMYT. The workshop gave an overview on the theory demonstrating the importance to keep certain information confidential, if patents are sought or if intellectual property protection is not available; it then went on analysing the contractual obligations within the WEMA project. The audience participated in a very animated discussion as to which parties ought to be required to keep information confidential and the means that can be used to make all players understand the importance and use of confidentiality without paralysing the project. The workshop was complemented by Ms Gabriela Wehrle, a Monsanto solicitor working on the WEMA project, who provided some practical tips on how to maintain information confidential. The workshop was very well received; everyone seemed to have understood the importance of confidentiality and its effective use.
